House Upon A Rock

This entry is part 12 of 11 in the series Psalm one

Hello everyone, and welcome back to another episode in our podcast and series on the book of Psalm one titled Preparing for the season. And in this final episode, titled “House upon a Rock” We are going to look closely at the words and warning of Jesus Christ in regard to the coming season of God’s wrath, and for us to understand we are to be preparing for the coming season.

And as we review the words of Jesus, the message we are to take away from what Jesus shared with us, is that we are to be practical upon hearing his word. And instead of waiting around for the second coming of Christ, we are to be preparing for the second coming of Jesus because the second coming of Jesus will be with destruction against those in rebellion, and a day of salvation for those of us who are prepared for his return.

Speaking with his disciples and coming to the end of his sermon, Jesus said, Matthew 7:24-25Therefore, whosoever heareth these sayings of mine and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.” This was the man who, upon hearing the gospel, the man who received the law of God, and upon receiving and discovering the heart of God began to prepare for the coming season according to the law of God.

But then Jesus went on to say, Matthew 7:26-27 “And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house, and it fell: and great was the fall of it.” And this Jesus said in regard to those who are in rebellion.

And as we come to the end of Psalm one, we can see in this review of both the righteous and the ungodly. According to Jesus, the righteous in rejecting the counsel of the ungodly began to build his house upon a rock, the rock of God’s word as he followed the instruction of God on how to prepare for the coming season. And because he did, he was able to survive the wrath and judgment of God standing in the congregation of the righteous.

But as we review the life and end of the ungodly, he was cursed to destruction, but not because of any desire of God because upon having the opportunity to prepare for the coming season he chose to scorn the law, and refusing to take delight in the law of God, made no arrangement to save himself and so the day came upon him as a thief in the night. And while he was shut out in the storm of God’s anger, the end result for the righteous was a blessing, and that blessing was that he survived which is why he is said to be blessed.

The righteous are blessed not because he read the law, nor because he had the law, but because he acted upon the word of God as he prepares for the coming day. That is why Jesus said, if we hear his words and do them, the key phrase here is to do, act on his word, we shall be like the wise man who builds his house upon a rock. And coming to this reality, it is written concerning the righteous. Psalms 1:3He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither, and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.”
