This entry is part 6 of 8 in the series The Coming Season

Like I have said before, Genesis is the story of Adam, but it is also a story concerning a centry old enmity and war and how the end will come upon the return of Jesus. And Like I have said at the beginning, we as Christians do have a role to play in putting an end to the kingdom of the Antichrist. And if we were to go back in scripture and search the prophecies, we will find the story has not changed regarding how the end will come, and that is because the end has been told from the beginning.

But before we explain how the end will come, let us look at the reason behind why Cain killed his brother. Now, most of us will say Cain killed his brother out of jealousy, and because he was rejected by God for presenting an unworthy sacrifice. But if we were listening to what I was saying regarding the story of Genesis, we will see that the story goes beyond the sacrifice and the reason behind Cain murdering his brother.

But to shed light on the cause as to why Cain killed his brother, let us ask ourselves two questions, what is Satan’s plan, and what was the temptation Satan brought to the mind of Adam? With these two questions in mind, we can then put together the story as to why Cain killed his brother because the plan of Satan has not changed, and what we have revealed according to his old plan is that Satan’s plan is to sit on the throne of God. Isaiah 14:14 “I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the Highest,” said Satan.

Now, if we had lost sight as to how Satan is hoping to achieve this plan of his, we will need to remind you Satan is powerless without the cooperation of man, and because he is powerless without the cooperation of man, he went first to Adam that he might have Adam submit to his rule, that is, Satan’s rule. Because Satan knew after creating man, God had placed the responsibility of the kingdom on the shoulders of Adam, and as man sits in authority over the works of God, if he, Satan could have Adam’s position, he could then have a seat on the throne of God.

Satan was able to accomplish this plan of his because of Adam’s disobedience, but only temporarily because at that very height of his reign, God came and put an end to his authority over the kingdom. However, because of the penalty man will have to bear which is death, he will remain under the curse he brought upon himself with the assurance he will one day be redeemed.

But moving on from that point, Adam gave birth to a son after some one hundred years and called his name Cain, and when he was born, Eve said, Genesis 4:1, “I have gotten a man from the Lord.” At this point in their lives, they were looking back at the promise that a son would come in the world, a redeemer of humanity, but as life goes on, and they began to observe the life of Cain, they saw he was not the promise of God.”

And after observing such disappointment with the birth of Cain, later in their lives they would give birth to another son and called his name Abel who was a keeper of sheep. Abel would prove to be a promising son in place of Cain because as the story goes, he brought of the best of his offering unto God, and this is the key for us to understand what took place for Adam to have bypass Cain and show his approval for Abel.

Let us now remember, we are dealing with the human side of the story of Genesis and let us never forget, although, the bible uses God often as saying something, the scripture is equally allowing us to understand God was speaking through Adam when these things were recorded. So, when we come to the story of Cain being rejected, and Abel being accepted, we need to understand this story is coming from the experience of Adam and the choice he made to favor Abel over Cain.

Adam saw that Cain was not worthy of the responsibility to carry the burden of the kingdom he would leave behind, and so over time as he watched how the two boys conducted themselves in the presence of God and in obedience to himself that is, Adam, through and by the direction of God, Adam favored Abel over Cain, and that is how we have the scripture telling us God was more pleasing of Abel over Cain.

Genesis 4:1-4, “And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the Lord. And she again bares his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. And in the process of time, said the scripture, it happened, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord. And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the Lord had respect unto Abel and to his offering:”

Now, do you see that the bible told us this event took some time, because it states, “And in the process of time, it happened, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord.” As I have said before, Adam was an observant player in the story and the one through whom God made the choice to choose Abel over his brother Cain, and when Cain saw that his father Adam had rejected him, he grew angry, and displayed that anger for some time so that the bible told us Cain became angry.

But why was Cain so moved to anger that he killed his brother because if we look closely at the story, the bible told us he was warned to change course, and that by changing course he would be accepted, and furthermore, Cain was told he had the power to repent and turn from the evil that was in his heart?

Let us consider these options, one, God gave Adam rule over the works of his hands, and a kingdom to come. Secondly, Satan swears he will sit on the throne of God in the kingdom to come, and in his pursuit tempted Adam who fell into sin only to be promised a redeemer was coming to save his life. Now, with that said, why was Cain so angry that he was moved to kill his brother?

God rejected Esau because he rejected his birthright, but let us be clear, Esau rejected the plan of God, so God reacted in kind. Therefore, when we come to Cain, we can then conclude Cain killed his brother because he was expecting to become head and ruler over the works of God after his father Adam died, and why? Cain was the first born. But when Adam passed him over, Cain realized he will have to serve his brother, and he, Cain would not have the opportunity to sit on the throne of the world.

That was when Adam, and God through Adam turned to Cain and said, “And the Lord said unto Cain, why art thou wroth? And why is thy countenance fallen? If thou do well, shall thou be not accepted? And if thou do not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.” In-other-words, if you had done what was right you would have been accepted, but because you chose to do what was wrong, you were rejected. However, the option to repent was provided, but Cain chose instead of repenting to go out and deceived his brother to believe he, Cain was with him, but then turn and killed his brother over the seat of his father Adam.

Now, I know you may turn and say to me, it was God who spoke with Cain, I am not debating whether it was God or Adam who spoke with Cain, and that it was not God who chose Abel over Cain. But what I am saying, we must never remove the human element from the story because the moment we do that, we will not find a way to explain what happened.

Because in all that we are reading, it was Adam who experienced these things, and when we read the first four chapters of Genesis, we are hearing the voice of God through the voice of Adam. In-other-words, God is using the experience of man to tell his story.

Let us understand this truth, when man sinned against God, God hid his face from man, so from the time of Adam before Christ came in the world, the face of God has been kept out of the reach of men. It was when Jesus came in the world, we were able touch and look upon his face. We handled God; we nailed him to a cross; we place a crown of thorn of his head; these things were made possible because God came in human flesh to offer himself on our behalf.

So, when we read these stories found on the pages of Genesis, we must never forget we are reading upon the lives of real people who knew God and based on what happened in their lives are telling us a story regarding the past, the future to come, and what our role will be at the end of the world. Now, with all that was said, Cain killed his brother because Satan had led Cain to believe he could become a god on the throne of God, but again Satan lost that battle to sit on the throne of God because in the end Seth took the place of Abel.

Genesis 4:25-26 Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, has appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew. And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.
