Blessed Is the Man?

This entry is part 1 of 5 in the series Blessed Man

Blessed is the man that walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in his law does he meditates day and night.  And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither, and whatsoever he does shall prosper.

The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind drives away. Therefore, the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the LORD knows the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

As we focus on Psalm one, we would like to ask the question “Why is the righteous blessed?”  That is, the man who walks not after the counsel of the ungodly, nor follow the path of sinners? Because there is no doubt, we are living in a world filled with deception and lifestyles we consider evil which makes it possible for us to fall in the trap of taking advice from evil and deceptive men.

But as we read Psalm one, there is something we need to consider before we can answer the question as to why the righteous is blessed above those who give bad advice that leads to destruction. And the first thing we need to do and consider is to put the scripture in context from God’s point of view and not our own human point of view.

The next thing we need to do before we can answer the question as to why the righteous is blessed above the ungodly, is to first consider from God’s point of view as to why is the righteous blessed regarding God’s judgment because according to the Psalmist, the righteous will stand in judgment, but unfortunately, the ungodly will fall.

Considering these things, we first need to understand what it means to be blessed or receive a blessing from God. I say this because growing up I would often hear people use the phrase in a greeting, or to say goodbye, and or to wish someone well that is facing hardship. And while there is nothing wrong in wishing someone well and good turnaround from a bad experience, the context; however, according to scripture in using the word blessed is a much more blessed experience.

And to understand the context in view of Psalm one, we’ll use James as our teacher to explain what it means to be blessed and or to bless someone. James describes the word blessed with the statement “If a brother or sister be naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you say unto them, “Depart in peace; be you warmed and filled without giving them those things which are needful to the body, what does it profit?” James 2:15-16.

James was speaking regarding faith and the works that go along with faith for it to truly be faith, and as we review Psalm one and the blessed man there is no doubt we can apply the message of James with the view point of Psalm one to understand what it means to be blessed.

According to James, to be blessed or to bless someone is not to only speak words of blessing because to be blessed according to James is to receive something of value, something we can use to help ourselves when we are in need.  It is not to say to someone “Be blessed” when they are in need, instead, it is to find out what those needs are and do what we can to supply what is needed at that moment. Because it is when we provide what we can to someone in need we are truly becoming a blessing.

Relating this to Psalm one, and why the man who walked not in the way and counsel of the ungodly is blessed, we can then realize he is blessed because he has received and will receive something of value from the Lord to be considered blessed. The righteous will receive something he can use to help himself to the effect he can truly say he has been blessed by God. And knowing the message of God is a message of salvation, we can then understand the righteous are blessed because at a time of need God has provided what was needed for him to be blessed.

We know the blessing the righteous man received was God’s provision to save his life. Salvation was the provision, a call to escape God’s wrath, and so we have painted for us a picture of what it means to be blessed, and why the righteous man will be blessed, he is blessed because he followed God’s instruction that allowed him to avoid falling in judgment.

God sent his son into the world so that he might save the world from judgment, but as it stands, not everyone will obey the son of God that they might escape God’s wrath and because not everyone will obey, but for the righteous, only the righteous will escape and find himself blessed of God because he had received something of value from the Lord.
